DoorBot is, in a word, awesome.
The new version of DoorBot is out and it's time to review the heck out of it, in that thorough Lazyboytech fashion that you'll only find here on my tech blog...
The new version of DoorBot was officially unveiled last night at the launch of PSFK’s Future of Home Living Experience in New York. Incase you don't know, DoorBot is a wifi video doorbell that connects to smartphones and tablets, DoorBot enables users to see who’s at the door and to talk with them more efficiently than ever.
DoorBot is installed in a matter of minutes and can be accessed through the free DoorBot app. Whether in the bedroom, the basement or miles away, users can see a live video and audio feed of their front door, bringing them peace of mind while away from home and convenience when in it. Recent improvements make it more efficient and easy to use and shipping will begin in September of this year. A few updates to DoorBot include:
New sleek design and smaller size.
Attaches to an existing traditional legacy doorbell for both charging and ringing of bell.
Also operable on an internal rechargeable lithium ion battery for approximately one year.
Improved faceplate and mounting elements to ensure the device is not easily stolen.
Optional remote Wifi enabled USB powered bell.
An interesting thing I would like to point out is that previously critics were concerned about how easy it would be for anyone to just walk up take the device and walk off with it. But now not only does the DoorBot have a new security mounting bracket but also a brand new theft guarantee: "In addition to the included security mounting bracket, we give you the ultimate peace of mind: if your DoorBot is stolen we will replace it free of charge."
One of my favorite features of this device is that you can literally use it from anywhere in the world. I'm a frequent flyer and right now I'm stationed in Taiwan studying Chinese for a couple of semesters, it would be nice to be able to communicate with the mailman back home and tell him to place my magazines inside the house so they don't get rained on.
“DoorBot is what the modern doorbell should be. Smart phones and tablets are all around us—it only makes sense to be able to answer your door with them,” said James Siminoff, CEO of BOT Home Automation, Inc. and inventor of DoorBot. “We have put a lot of work into making DoorBot the world’s greatest doorbell.” DoorBot is also fully compatible with Lockitron, enabling users to let family and trusted friends into their home remotely. DoorBot is priced at $199 or can be purchased with Lockitron (regularly $179) for $349. Check out the official website here: http://www.getdoorbot.com/

I don't know if it's just me or if anyone else has had this idea, but I totally want my custom version of DoorBot decked out to resemble HAL from 2001 Space Odyssey...
