Depressed Robots and the Solution to Overpopulation
You know when you suddenly die in a video game...
...and then you walk outside for the first time in weeks...
But then you run back inside because there are too many people outside.
If you live in a crowded area then you definitely know this feeling.
Well don't panic, science has a solution!
Behold the vastness of space.
So why not harvest this endless amount of potential housing?
I mean we've seriously over crowded our world with junk, so why not spread it all throughout the galaxy?
Now I'm not talking about just dumping all the people that you don't like into space...
...but lets still keep that as an option ;p
No I'm talking about becoming an extraterrestrial civilization.
The process of becoming an extraterrestrial civilization starts simply with small space programs similar to NASA, but then soon evolves into a larger space mission with a constant stream of spaceships launching into space to provide supplies for large space stations orbiting the earth. But then where do you go from there? Maybe you could create an earth two...or go scout out other habitable planets...but how can we harvest the most energy to support a massive extraterrestrial civilization? Well, one idea is to build solar energy-collecting structures in space and live on them.
British physicist Freeman Dyson took this concept to its logical extreme in his 1957 proposal that advanced extraterrestrial civilizations might encase their stars in artificially constructed spheres. The radius of these spheres Dyson proposed would be equal to that of the Earth's orbit.
The problem is that these sphere would have enough angular momentum to offset the star's gravity, but the poles would be prone to collapse.
One way to address this problem is to implement a series of Larrey Niven type ring worlds tilted at different angles, thus balancing it all out. Thus our future "Earth" would look like so:
Creating millions of miles of prime real-estate.
I love to think that our civilization will soon expand to the point that we can create out own worlds and planets. Imagine picking out a planet to live on, or visiting another solar system. Imagine taking nothing but your bathrobe, a towel, and a depressed robot and scouting the galaxy in search of a new home and on the way trying to comprehend the meaning of life and existence as we know it...
