Skidome Denmark
With over three kilometers of ski slopes, the ambitious
Skidome Denmark is soon to become the world's largest ski dome...
Danish architectural firm, CEBRA, has partnered with Ski Travel Agency Danski, to work on a new project of epic proportions. Their plan is to build the wold's largest skidome in Randers, Denmark.
"The construction consists of three...slopes, each with their own competence level, challenging both beginners and experts." Says the Skidome web site, "The dome will also accommodate a hotel, a restaurant with a striking view, an after-skiing bar and shops with every skiing product imaginable, suiting the needs of the passionate skier. In addition, the exterior walls of the dome are constructed to enable outdoor skiing, a lovely city park and an urban playground, facilitating a variety of activities."
Skidome Denmark will be shaped like a snow-flake, with three criss-crossing arches. The tallest arch will reach 110 meters in height. The form's three massive arches span 700 meters each and strongly mark their presence while spanning across the Gudenåen river. The three arches will be connected in the middle where elevators will allow skiers to access the other levels. Instead of windows the structure will feature perforated walls that will give skiers a view of the river and the surrounding meadows. Each piste will have its own chair lift, feature real snow, and will offer varying degrees of difficulty, with two blue, two red, and two black runs. The topography of the slopes will be based on the Alpe D'Huez ski resort in France but CEBRA said the slopes could be altered to give skiers a different experience on each visit.
The skidome is also intended for more than just skiing. While the arches' will utilize both the exterior and interior surfaces as slopes, designers say the middle arch will be shaped like an 'urban playground' and will offer facilities for skateboarding and BMX riding. The bottom arch has a green lanscape roof providing the flexibility for a wide range of leisure activities.
Simon Oscar Anderson, spokesman for Danski said: "We have placed and designed the ski dome over the river to connect the different neighborhoods in the town of Randers. Actually, we will give a whole lot to the city - the world's biggest ski dome, and a whole new connection across the river, which solves a lot of infrastructural problems for the city."
While Skidome Denmark is still in it's conceptual stages, Ski Dubai retains it's title as the biggest ski dome in the world. The ambitious structure is located in the Mall of the Emirates, covers 22,500 square meters, and even features it's own resident penguins.
