Street Pong

Quite possibly the coolest traffic stop anywhere on earth...
But wait! If you've already seen this then skip to the end for a dark secret...

In Hildesheim, Germany, pedestrians won't be bored waiting for the walk signal at this traffic light. Instead they can challenge someone waiting on the opposite side of the street, to a game of Pong.

Two students from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HAWK) in the city of Hildesheim, came up with the idea to pass the time while waiting at the crosswalk. Sandro Engel and Holger Michel teamed up to create a game of "Street Pong", based on one of the very first video games, Atari's Pong, and hooked it up to the street posts.

When the light is red, you can challenge someone to a quick game on the opposite side of the street. Whichever player scores the most points while waiting for the “walk” signal is the winner. It's billed as a concept of urban interaction and has already gotten large number of online followers. Below is the video everyone is talking about, where you can see them playing it.

Sure beets waiting for the light while playing real pong...

Unfortunately enough the story is fake. I'm sorry. I usually only post stories about real tech, but this one is getting so much attention lately that I had to address it and confirm it's invalidity.

"To achieve the video’s realistic effect, Engel and Michel used a yellow-painted cardboard model of the game device, which was attached to the traffic pole. Then, over the course of ten days, they computer-edited the video and added in digital imagery of the pong game where the screen would have been on the real-life version." -- www.germany.info

Dang, and I was getting so excited about pwning random people every time I crossed the street to 7-eleven. But that's the fact of the matter, real life sucks...
